Built at the end of the 1920s by Henauer Witschi, the Alte Börse building in Zurich is now a landmarked historical site. It is defined by its circular floor plan, which is formed by a steel structure and a glass roof that illuminates the space.

spillmann echsle’s design for the new headquarters of Wüest & Partner expands the spatial concept of 'ring within a ring'. This reference to the site’s origins creates a link between the historical past and its future usage by an international company.

Inspired by the collective knowledge of Wüest & Partner’s employees, the “brain pool” concept materializes as a central library. This library serves not only as a repository of knowledge, but also as a space for learning and communication. The ring that houses the library both organizes and delineates the space, separating the central multifunctional open area from the adjacent zones.

The careful selection of materials in this design is characterized by industrial anhydrite floors, cement mortar structures, and the exposed glass roof. The composition is complemented and further enriched by the inclusion of smoked oak. In this harmonious combination of materials, the space acquires an ambiance diffused with elegance and tranquility.

The technical modifications include ventilation, cooling, and electrical distribution. Together, they optimize both functionality and acoustics. The ring houses installations for power, data, cooling and heating, and air treatment. This also ensures the integration of fire protection and other functional aspects. These technical enhancements allow the library to evolve as an integrative center for both analog and digital work. As reflected in its architectural design, this space affirms the fusion of past and future; tradition and innovation.
