Turgi Spinning Mill Transformation
location: Turgi, Switzerland
client: ABB Immobilien AG
status: Project
project: 2016–2019

The Turgi spinning mill, considered to be the largest structure in the canton of Aargau, was the largest mill in Switzerland and stands as a testament to Switzerland’s industrial heritage. Even today, the industrial buildings and workers’ housing in neo-classical and neo-gothic styles characterize the village of Turgi. Currently, the site houses an office building, combined with facilities for production, storage, and workshops.

The project proposes a mix of new uses: The ground floor on Spinnereistrasse is earmarked for public uses that enliven and enhance the neighbourhood via a restaurant, commercial and service areas, all with public appeal and character.

Above the ground floor, the two primary buildings are reimagined for residential use, naturally integrated with the existing structures. 38 loft-style apartments, mostly duplex layouts, are accessible via a long corridor with subtle undulations.
