The existing detached single-family house, built in 1945, is set back from the street next to another property in a quiet residential area in Kilchberg, Zurich. To adapt the small house to meet the current needs of a young family, the building volume is increased to the full extent allowed under local zoning laws. By raising the roof and extending the width of the structure, the overall size was increased without altering its impact on its surroundings.

The ground floor now accommodates a spacious living and dining area with a kitchen. The newly acquired space upstairs is used for an additional children's room and a spacious informal room directly connected to an open stairway. The slightly elevated roof facilitates the transformation of the attic into an expansive primary bedroom with a separate bathroom. The new staircase, a new, central architectural element in the house, fluidly connects the various floors. Two large skylights infuse the interior with unexpected generosity and natural light, offering skyward views and a sense of spaciousness. The careful selection of materials used in the interior, such as the oiled spruce floors and custom-made solid doors, references the home's history.

Large windows maintain an open, unrestricted view of the outside. Interventions on the facade interface with classical 1940s elements; shutters are alternately placed to the left or right of the windows, and subtle differences in granularity and color of the plasterwork draw attention to the distinctive features of the facade.ubtle differences in granularity and color of the plasterwork draw attention to the distinctive features of the facade.
